Physics and Fandoms

You can be the King, but watch the Queen conquer.

" I  w i l l  n o t  c o n d o n e  a  c o u r s e  of  a c t i o n  t h a t  w i l l  l e a d  u s  t o  w a r. "

are you actually a scientist?

That’s what my research supervisor keeps telling me. I can’t imagine that anyone would spend 6+ hours sitting in front of a thermocycler begging it for mercy during a PCR as like, a casual hobby.

I think my favorite thing about the fandom culture on tumblr are the headcanon posts. They’re all revolutionary, because they almost invariably come from marginalized voices. We who have been unloved by the world imagine our favorite characters loving us, fighting for us. Where their creators expect us to exalt them through uncritical worship, we do it by humbling them instead. We make them better by making them one of us.

We racebend, or we explore and celebrate the cultural backgrounds of non-white characters whose ethnicities have been canonically overlooked. We reclaim them as queer or non-binary or neurotypical or disabled, and then we imagine them loving themselves and being loved by their communities. We take characters who have been broken in their battles and envision for them days of quiet happiness, of rest and healing and small comforts, because we’ve been there and we know exactly what you need. We turn them into the role models we should have, that we desperately need, and I think it helps us love ourselves more too.

So don’t ever stop writing posts about Scott McCall hearing his mother sing lullabies in Spanish or Bucky Barnes helping kids get prosthetics or charity-starting bisexual Steve Rogers who stands up for women’s rights or Hogwarts houses validating their trans students. Give me all your fan art of fat Feferi and hijabi Rose Lalonde and the Avengers in a big cuddle pile of mutual self care. This is so important, don’t let anybody tell you differently. I appreciate it all so much.

Okay, just hear me out for a second.

Muggleborn kid with a talent for magic. Not real magic. Like, sleight of hand magic. And then a prefect catches them doing something like making a ball appear to vanish or whatever, and just loses their shit because this 11 year old kid has utterly mastered Vanishing Spells and what the hell how is that even possible.

What is this I hear about a Doctor Who Musical? Did you tell me about this before and I just forgot??

In high school my friends and I wrote a Doctor Who musical. We finished writing it in my senior year, but it was never preformed because as we were about to start rehearsal a bunch of issues arose (not enough actors, Captain Jack+Catholic School=problems, etc.) and we didn’t have enough time to fix everything and take AP tests and everything else that comes with senior year. So I have a pile of scripts in TARDIS blue folders ready for editing and performance. I don’t have all the music, and I’m not sure the person that wrote most of the music still has it. But the songs themselves are all sort of laid out, and with some hunting I could probably find about 80% of the music. My friend who wrote the music the first time may even be willing to work with us on it again over the summer. He’s not doing anything as far as I know.

The musical is about 11, Amy, Rory, Jenny (the Doctor’s Daughter, not Vashtra’s wife), The Master, Harriet Jones, Captain Jack Harkness, and an OC villain. It fixes the pre-50th anniversary special plot holes about the Time War. So now it conflicts with canon, but honestly I like our version better.

I still would like to see it performed. I just don’t have time to organize it. I’d love to give it to someone in the area to edit and direct it, and just let me come by and give suggestions. I can send you everything digital I have from it if you want to take a look. It’ll take me a while to assemble it all, but if you’re interested, I’d be glad to.
